Abstract

Iron (III) oxide is a heterogeneous catalyst whose catalytic capacity can be improved by applying it to porous materials such as CaO. Calcium oxide can act as a support and a heterogeneous base catalyst. This impregnation can increase the catalytic activity of iron (III) oxide by expanding the active site and increasing basicity. In this research, the Fe2O3/CaO catalyst was made and used in the application of converting eugenol to vanillin using methanol solvent. The aim of this research is to characterize the Fe2O3/CaO catalyst based on FTIR and XRD instruments and analyze the conversion results using a GC-MS instrument. Fe2O3/CaO catalyst preparation was carried out using the wet impregnation method و followed و by و calcination و at و a و temperature و of و℃ 800 و and و flowing with N2 gas for 4 hours. The Fe2O3/CaO catalyst was successfully synthesized based on FTIR spectrum identification with an absorption at a wavelength of 586 cm-1 which was identified as belonging to Fe-O and an absorption at a wavelength of 871 cm-1 which was identified as belonging to Ca-O. The XRD results indicate the presence of Fe2O3 hematite material at peaks 2ϑ 35.74 and 54.30. The XRD diffractogram indicates CaO material at peak 2ϑ 17.79. 28.55. 29.21. 37.3. 50.6. And 64.1. Based on the GC-MS test, the Fe2O3/CaO catalyst succeeded in converting 0.17% vanillin.
