Abstract
Many students struggle to grasp basic physics concepts, particularly related to quantities and measurements. One of the main contributing factors is the learning model that lacks interactivity and does not actively engage students in the process of concept discovery. This study aims to evaluate the effect of the discovery learning model in a grade 10 physics course on the topic of quantities and measurements. The objectives of this study are: (1) to determine whether there is an effect of applying the discovery learning model on the understanding of physics concepts by grade 10 students in the topic of quantities and measurements, and (2) to find out whether there is an improvement in the understanding of physics concepts among grade 10 students after being taught using the discovery learning model. The method used in this study is a quasi-experimental research design with a pretest-posttest nonequivalent control group design. The sample was taken using random sampling, involving 60 grade 10 students in Phase E at a school in Bantul Regency. Data collection was carried out through a concept comprehension test consisting of 8 essay questions based on three indicators. The results of the study showed that: (1) based on the paired sample t-test results, the post-test scores in the "Equal variances assumed" section indicated that the Sig. (2-tailed) value was 0.000 < 0.05, leading to the conclusion that H_0 is rejected and H_a is accepted. This indicates a significant effect of the discovery learning model on students' understanding of physics concepts in the grade 10 physics course on the topic of quantities and measurements. (2) Based on the Ngain test, the results for the experimental and control classes were 0.468 (moderate) and 0.074 (low), respectively, indicating a significant improvement in the experimental class. The findings suggest that the discovery learning model influences students' understanding of physics concepts in the topic of quantities and measurements and can enhance their comprehension of this material.
