Abstract

Multicomponent analysis of complex mixture of congo red and methylene blue dyes with MCR method approach has been conducted. This study aims to assess the physical and chemical characteristics based on the colour, as well as the absorption spectra generated from the complex mixture of congo red and methylene blue dye solutions, identify the spectra of single components of the complex components, and examine the correlation between the proportion of MCR concentration results and the actual concentration. UV-Vis spectrophotometry was applied to obtain data on the absorption spectra profile of the mixture of congo red and methylene blue. Then, it was analysed using the Blind Source Separation (BSS) method with the MCR method approach as evidenced by conducting a conformity test between the MCR result single component spectra and the actual single component spectra using the chi-squared test, and a linear regression analysis between the MCR result concentration proportion matrix and the actual concentration. The results showed that the complex mixture of congo red and methylene blue dye solution produced different colour intensities with a more complex UV-Vis spectra profile than the single component solution spectra. The results of the analysis show that the MCR method can separate and identify the spectra of single components from complex components with the results of the chi-squared test obtained a p-value of 1, meaning that there is almost no significant difference between the single component spectra of MCR results with the actual single component spectra of congo red and methylene blue dyes. The results of the linear regression analysis between the concentration proportion matrix of the MCR results and the actual concentrations of the dyes showed a linear correlation with a correlation coefficient value of 0.987 for component one (congo red) and a correlation value of 0.747 for component two (methylene blue). Based on the results of the study, it shows that the MCR method can identify the spectra of single components in complex components with a correlation relationship between the proportion of the MCR result concentration and the actual concentration, but further research still needs to be done related to the linearity range of validation tests for quantitative analysis.
