Abstract

Cutting workpieces using a CNC Plasma Cutting machine produces residue in the form of lumps on the surface of the plate which results in a rough surface. The surface roughness causes the workpiece size to be imprecise and difficult to assemble with other parts in certain products. This study aims to determine the optimal parameter combination in minimizing surface roughness in the results of cutting SS 430 plates using CNC Plasma Cutting. The experimental design method used in this research is the Taguchi method. The factors used are nozzle diameter, cutting speed, cutting height, and gas pressure with 3 levels in each factor. Data processing was done by calculating the S/N ratio with the quality characteristics of smaller is better and two-way ANOVA. Based on the results of S/N ratio data processing, the optimal parameter combinations obtained in this study are nozzle diameter of 1.3 mm, cutting speed of 2400 mm/min, cutting height of 1.5 mm, and gas pressure of 80 psi. Based on two-way ANOVA data processing, the percent contribution to the nozzle diameter factor is 68.69%, the cutting speed factor is 11.81%, the cutting height factor is 1.53%, and the gas pressure factor is 0.85%. The factor that has a significant effect on surface roughness is the nozzle diameter because it has a P-Value of less than 0,05, which is 0,001. The experimental results confirm that the use of the optimal parameter combination is proven to minimize surface roughness.
