Abstract

A lathe is an important tool in the manufacturing industry, especially in the manufacture of components such as bolts. The quality of the bolts produced is greatly influenced by the optimal turning parameters. The research conducted at the Industrial Engineering Laboratory of UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta aims to determine the optimal parameters on conventional lathes with the Response Surface Methodology (RSM) approach using Box-Behnken design. The object of research is Knuth 150 BASIC SUPER lathe. The parameters varied in this study are Depth of Cut, Feed Rate, and Spindle Speed. The response variable observed is the total gap between the dimensions of the turning results and the dimensions of the product design. This total gap is an important indicator in determining the quality of the bolts produced. The smaller the total gap, the better the quality of the bolts produced. This research shows that the optimal parameter combination on a conventional lathe is Depth of Cut of 0.659091 mm, Feed Rate of 0.146263 mm/rev, and Spindle Speed of 337,727 rpm. The most influential parameter is Spindle Speed with an F-Value of 1,23 and a contribution of 17,28%. Although, the significant value is 0,341>0.05. However, if you look at the standard effect, there is a parameter that has a P-Value of 0.047, namely in the combination of the depth of cut parameter with spindle speed. By knowing the optimal parameters in the production process, it can improve bolt dimensional accuracy by minimizing the gap between the initial product design and the final product.
