Abstract
The Munggah Molo ritual is a cultural heritage from the ancestors that still exists and is believed in by the local community. Munggah Molo is a ritual performed by the community when beginning the construction of a house. "Molo" refers to a large wooden beam that becomes the central foundation of the roof of the house being built. The Munggah Molo ritual is conducted as an expression of gratitude and aims to seek protection and safety for the homeowner. This study examines the Munggah Molo ritual as applied in the beliefs of the Kandeman Village community, Kandeman Subdistrict, and explores the symbolic meanings contained in the Munggah Molo ritual. This study is a type of field research. The approach used in this research is anthropological and sociological. The anthropological approach is applied to examine the meanings contained in the Munggah Molo tradition and its relationship with the community. This study explores how the overall tradition of Munggah Molo is related to the community's beliefs and the elements they hold dear in the ritual. The sociological approach is used because the practice of this ritual involves various elements of the community, both those who participate directly and those who do not. This research uses a qualitative descriptive method by conducting observations, documentation, and interviews. Secondary data were obtained through village documents. After conducting this research, it can be concluded that every element in the Munggah Molo ritual in Kandeman Village has symbols and meanings believed by the community. Although there are views that this tradition may no longer be relevant, the community continues to preserve it as part of their ancestral heritage. In its implementation, this ritual does not only represent one group, culture, or belief. Instead, it encompasses all elements, from offerings as part of the local Javanese community's beliefs to prayers offered representing religious communities. Clifford Geertz's perspective indicates that the symbols in the Munggah Molo ritual hold strong value for the community, reflecting human life and spiritual aspects. This ritual serves as a means for the community to seek solutions to various life problems, reflecting an expression relevant to their social needs. The symbolic approach helps to understand that the Munggah Molo ritual reflects the relationship with nature, knowledge, and beliefs, and enhances the community's spirituality through gratitude.
