Abstract

Looking at the Arab nation in the past where Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) preached and brought the teachings of Islam as a mercy to all worlds (rahmatan lil ‘alamin) to improve human life, we see that at that time, the general condition of Arab society was not bound by standard rules of ethics and morals. They disregarded the etiquette of how to respect and appreciate others, as they did not seek permission when entering someone else's home. There was a difference in viewpoints and understanding among individuals from various perspectives, making the discussion about requesting permission to enter a house still controversial. As time progressed, many new thoughts emerged, creating many new rules based on the current conditions and perspectives of society. This research is a type of qualitative research, specifically library research, conducted in a descriptive-analytical manner by presenting related data. It refers to the primary and secondary sources that have been collected and then processed to derive conclusions from the analysis conducted. This study employs the ma’āni al-hadīs approach offered by Fazlur Rahman, namely the double movement theory carried out socio-historically based on historical data of Islam and its teachings, which are then studied and understood in various contexts in relation to the development of time by observing past events and their contexts today. The results of this study are: first, the primary hadith in this research found in Sahih Muslim No. 2153 explains the proper way to request permission when visiting someone's house, considering the background of the event at that time. Second, viewed through Fazlur Rahman's hadith understanding approach, this primary hadith mentions that if a person has asked for permission three times but has not been granted permission, they should leave. This indicates that the three-times request for permission in today's context has slight differences from its practice in the past, where now permission can be requested through modern tools. However, fundamentally, the practice of asking for permission three times using modern means should not diminish the ethical etiquette in accordance with Islamic teachings as a form of respect and self-protection from forbidden matters. Lastly, the implication of understanding the hadith about requesting permission to enter a house three times is that neglecting the etiquette and rules such as asking for permission three times when visiting is considered a violation, as it can damage one's dignity.
