Abstract

This research aims to find out the factors that cause damage to ancient manuscripts and their countermeasures at Pura Pakualaman Library Yogyakarta. This research used descriptive qualitative method. Data collection techniques were carried out by observation, interview and documentation. Data analysis used data reduction, data presentation and then conclusions were drawn. The validity test of this research uses triangulation. The results of this study indicate that the causes of damage to ancient manuscripts are caused by several factors, namely biota factors in the form of termites, bookworms and fungi. Physical factors are temperature and humidity, dust and light that are not well cared for. Then chemical factors in the form of ink material on the manuscript. Other factors, namely humans, can also have a major effect on causing damage. The last is the age factor of the manuscript which causes the manuscript to be vulnerable to damage. The most damage is caused by chemical factors in the form of faded ink on the manuscript. The countermeasures taken are fumigation, thermix control, installation of mothballs, installation of humid air absorbing materials, cleaning ancient manuscript storage cabinets, cleaning the library room, and also digitizing ancient manuscripts. The obstacles faced by the library to overcome damage to ancient manuscripts are the lack of personnel to carry out maintenance of ancient manuscripts every day. In addition, funds to fulfill the daily maintenance needs of ancient manuscripts are also still lacking.
