Abstract

Dramatari Wayang Golek Menak is an art work by Sultan Hamengkubuwana IX, which began when he saw the Menak Golek Puppet show performed by a puppeteer from Kedu. From these performances the Sultan was interested in creating new art similar to the Wayang Wong Dramatari which at that time was very popular because it was often staged on a grand scale and was confirmed as a state ritual art. To counter the popularity of the Wayang Wong Dramatari, the Sultan created the Menak Wayang Golek Dramatari is unique because it is different from most other arts which usually tell stories from the Mahabharata and Ramayana. The Sultan took Islamic elements from the Hikayat Amir Hamzah or in the Javanese tradition it is called the Menak Story. The purpose of this research is to first look at the process of creating the Menak Wayang Golek Dramatari during the time of Sultan Hamengkubuwana IX. Second to find out why the Sultan created this art, which is related to the traditional arts belonging to other palaces. The third is about the challenges faced by the Dramatari Wayang Golek Menak in Yogyakarta, especially in the 21st century. The theory used in this study is the theory put forward by John Obert Voll, namely Continuity and Change, and the method used is the historical method which includes four stages of research, namely heuristics, verification, interpretation, and historiography. The results of the research show that there is a synchronization of the story contained in the Serat Menak manuscript with the dramatari which was originally only beksan (pethilan) which developed into a drama for a wider and more complete context. The Sultan's reasons for creating this art were first, to compete with the Dramatari Wayang Wong, whose idea emerged when he saw the Menak Wayang Golek performance that caught his attention. Second, the Menak Wayang Golek, if it is turned into a dance, according to him has beauty, thirdly, as a medium of Islamic da'wah, and fourthly, as a work of one of the works as a king. The process of creating the Menak Wayang Golek Dramatari was divided into three stages, the first was the formation period which was realized directly by the Sultan (1941-1952), the second was the development period of Beksan Golek Menak into a dance drama (1952- 1970), and finally the final refinement process before the Sultan died (1970-1987).
