Abstract

The purpose of this research was to find out the Strategy of Children’s Reading Interest Development and its constraints in the Bantul District Public Library. This research took place at the Regional Public Library in Bantul Regency. This research uses descriptive qualitative method. The data collection were carried out through non-participatory observation, semi-structured interviews and documentation studies. The validity test of the data used is observation extension, source triangulation, and technical triangulation. The data analysis techniques in this research were carried out through data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The result of this research is that the Public Library of Bantul Regency has implemented a strategy to foster interest in reading in children, especially children starting from PAUD, Kindergarten and Elementary School. Strategies for fostering children's interest in reading carried out by the library include a) planning an interest in reading program which consists of several stages, namely problem identification, targets, budget and determining program objectives for each interest in reading program, b) implementing an interest in reading program consisting of activities story telling, showing educational films, holding competitions and mobile library services, c) controlling interest in reading programs by involving structural officials d) assessing (evaluating) interest in reading programs. Obstacles in fostering children's reading interest in the form of: weather factors when fostering reading interest is carried out in remote places, uneven ability of personnel in delivering coaching, time constraints that often collide with other activities related to librarianship, and insufficient fleet for coaching.
