Abstract

Communication is one of the main characteristics of living beings that cannot be separated from daily life and is crucial in supporting human social life. With the advancement of information technology, communication methods have evolved from traditional to more modern ways. One of the most dominant communication tools used today is instant messaging applications, particularly WhatsApp, which had 2 billion active monthly users as of April 2024. This study aims to measure the perceived usability of the WhatsApp application using the System Usability Scale (SUS) instrument, which has been modified into eight versions, each with 10 questions, to assess the consistency of respondents' answers. The methods used include descriptive statistics with calculations from moments 1 to 4, simple inferential statistics to calculate the margin of error, and SUS score calculations. The use of descriptive and inferential statistical methods provides a more comprehensive understanding of the application's usability, while the differences in responses between the original and modified versions indicate the complexity of users' perceptions of the application. The study results show that the WhatsApp application received a SUS score of 70.3, which falls into the 'C' grade and an adjective rating of 'Good', with an acceptability range deemed 'marginal' but tending towards 'acceptable'. The usability score calculation based on real data also shows the same result, indicating that the WhatsApp application received a 'Good' rating with a median score of 3.8. Additionally, there were significant differences in responses to the second question between the original and modified versions of the SUS instrument, resulting in a distribution of responses that were balanced but showed different extremes, producing cumulative data that was neutrally scaled. Nevertheless, overall, each SUS question item indicated a 'good' scale tending towards 'very good'.
