Abstract

The aim of this study was to describe the coping strategies used by cat owners after losing their pets. The urgency of this research lies in the growing number of cat owners and the fact that their relationship with their cats is often deeper than relationships between humans. Additionally, studies on coping strategies in dealing with the loss of a pet cat are still very limited. This study uses a qualitative phenomenological method with purposive sampling, with the criteria being four informants who have owned a cat for at least three years and have experienced the death of a pet cat. Data were collected through interviews. The results of the study show that all informants experienced sadness after losing their cats, but it was not deeply prolonged. The informants used two dimensions of coping strategies: problem-focused coping and emotional-focused coping. In problem-focused coping, all four informants shared similarities in seeking informational support, making compromises, and engaging in planful problem-solving. In emotional-focused coping, they all engaged in rationalization, compensation, repression, seeking social emotional support, avoiding escape behaviors, accepting responsibility, and positive reappraisal. The four informants differed in their coping strategies, such as in confrontation, isolation, confrontive coping, denial, sublimation, and self-control. All informants felt that sharing their stories and experiences with fellow cat lovers helped them cope with their grief and provided a sense of relief after losing their pets. They also felt supported and empathized with by the cat lover community and friends.
