Abstract
High expectation, personal or academic problems lead to non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) behaviour among college students. The predictor that is alleged to reduce non-suicidal self-injury behaviour is emotion regulation. This study aims to determine the relationship between emotion regulation and NSSI behaviour among university students in Yogyakarta. The method used was a quantitative approach with a correlational research design. Respondents who participated were 175 (51 males, 124 females, with aged 18-25 years) students in D.I. Yogyakarta who were taken using convenience sampling techniques. This study used 2 measuring instruments, namely the adoption of the Non-suicidal Self-injury Assessment-Tools or NSSI-AT scale and the adaptation of the ERQ scale (The Emotional Regulation Questionnaire). Data were analysed using multiple regression analysis test. The results of data analysis showed that there is a relationship between emotional regulation and NSSI in students. The effective contribution of emotion regulation to NSSI is 62.3%. Partially, it is also known that there is a negative relationship between the cognitive reappraisal aspect in emotion regulation and NSSI with a contribution of 21%, and there is a positive relationship between the expressive suppression aspect in emotion regulation and NSSI with a contribution of 42%. The results of the differential test analysis also gave description that there was no difference in the level of NSSI among respondents based on gender. This result gives theoretical implications that in regulation of emotions, expressive supprecation actually increases NSSI, thus the use of cognitive reapresaials needs to be more dominant in decreasing NSSI.
