Abstract

Students of South Kalimantan who come to continue their study in Java, particularly in Yogyakarta, need to adapt the intercultural communication, which leads to varying adaptation processes. Among 25 students of South Kalimantan, 18 returned home due to dissatisfaction of living in Yogyakarta. It raises the research question of How do South Kalimantan students accommodate intercultural communication in Yogyakarta? The theoretical framework for this study includes Intercultural Communication Theory and Communication Accommodation Theory. This research employs a qualitative descriptive approach. The subjects of the study are South Kalimantan students residing at the South Kalimantan Student Dormitory in Yogyakarta. Data collection methods include interviews, literature studies, and observations. The findings indicate that the cultural adaptation made by informants reflect different approaches in managing convergence, divergence, and over-accommodation. Some students from the Banjar ethnic group engage in convergence by adjusting their speaking style to match their interlocutors. Even if they found that the adaptation is not easy, as they often influenced by their previous culture. Some of them execute the divergence, which leads to various impacts such as social isolation and difficulties in communication and network building. While divergence can serve as a means to maintain personal identity and beliefs, it also poses challenges in adaptation.
