Abstract
This study aims to determine how the symbols of Islamic teachings are present in the Sekaten ritual at the Yogyakarta Palace. Sekaten ritual is a ritual that is always holds every year by the Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat Sultanate. This ritual which is a cultural activity not only contains religious values but is also intended to invite people to say the shahada, get to know the Prophet Muhammad SAW, and also Allah SWT. This study was conducted using a qualitative method where the researcher collected data by conducting interviews with Mr. Budi Setiawan as the former caretaker of the Gedhe Kauman Mosque, direct observation when the Sekaten ritual was held, and documentation in the form of literature, and photos of the Sekaten ritual. This study uses Roland Barthes' semiotic theory to understand the symbols of Islamic teachings that present in the Sekaten ritual. Based on the analysis that has been carried out, the meaning of denotation, connotation, and myth was found in the procession of miyos gongso, numplak wajik, miyos dalem, kondur gongso, and grebeg in the Sekaten ritual. In each sekaten procession, there are religious symbols of Islamic teachings that are conveyed in the form of objects present in each procession. These objects are present in the form of gamelan, wajik, gunungan, texts of the prophet's stories and so on, each of which represents symbols of Islamic teachings.
