Abstract

Various studies have shown that the most influential factor in the formation of tolerance character is the family. The family is the first and main environment for child development. There are several aspects of the family that influence character building, including children’s attachment to parents, communication in the family, and parental exemplary. This study aims to determine the role of parent- child communication variables and parental exemplary tolerance in mediating the relationship between children’s attachment to parents and students’ tolerance character. This study used quantitative-correlational and qualitative approaches as support. The research subjects were 809 students from 4 high schools in Yogyakarta city. Sampling in each school was conducted using cluster random sampling technique. Data collection methods used 4 psychological scales (tolerance character, children’s attachment to parents, parent-child communication, and parents’ exemplary in tolerance) and interviews. Quantitative data analysis techniques used GLM mediated models and Pearson pruduct moment from the Jamovi program and for qualitative data using three streams of activities, namely data condensation, data presentation/display, and conclusion drawing/verification. The results showed that: (1) Exemplary parents in tolerating can play a partial role in mediating the relationship between attachment to parents and tolerance character, (2) Parent-child communication does not play a role in mediating the relationship between attachment to parents and student tolerance character, (3) There is an influence of children’s attachment to parents on tolerance character, and (4) There is no relationship between the length of time students study in schools with religious heterogeneity with tolerance character. The implication of the results of this study is that to form the character of tolerance of children/students, it is required (1) Parents foster emotional relationships with children from an early age, so it is hoped that children’s attachment to parents will be formed, (2) Parents need to make themselves a role model in tolerance, (3) Parents do not need to worry about sending their children to Islamic-based schools because Islamic- based schools have no difference with non-Islamic-based schools in shaping students’ tolerance character.
