Abstract

Self-determination is the ability of an individual to identify themselves. The challenge faced by the education sector in the context of self-determination is how individuals can maintain strong intrinsic motivation, despite being confronted with various internal and external challenges that may hinder this process. Therefore, the field of education must pay attention to the self-determination conditions of those involved, particularly students. This concern also extends to pesantren (Islamic boarding schools), which are educational institutions known for their emphasis on character and personality development among students (santri). Based on this premise, this study aims to examine the phenomenon of self-determination among the santri at Pesantren Bumi Cendekia, Yogyakarta, one of the pesantren that implements a blended curriculum in its teaching. The research employs a qualitative descriptive method using Ryan and Deci's Self-Determination Theory. The self-determination conditions of the Bumi Cendekia santri are examined from the aspects of problems and influencing factors. In terms of problems, three key needs are considered: competence, autonomy, and relatedness, while the influencing factors are divided into internal and external aspects. The research findings indicate that the self-determination challenges among the Bumi Cendekia santri are diverse, such as a lack of self-confidence, limited openness, and interpersonal conflicts. In response to these issues, the pesantren administration has adopted policies that provide appropriate accommodations for the psychological problems experienced by the santri. This approach is influenced in part by the pesantren's integrated curriculum, which positions the santri not only as objects but also as subjects in the learning process and activities. Additionally, the pesantren, as an external factor influencing the self-determination of the santri, places significant emphasis on their psychological well-being. This approach is a result of the integration of classical and modern curricula, which remain open to development while preserving the pesantren's distinctive characteristics. Therefore, the blended curriculum used by Pesantren Bumi Cendekia has a positive impact on the self-determination conditions of the santri.
