Abstract

This thesis aims to take a closer look at Nawaning Nusantara as a female Islamic boarding school cleric in building and utilizing the authority she has. This research elaborates on two main questions: why did the concept of female ulama emerge? What are the dynamics of Nawaning Nusantara's struggle in building their leadership authority within the Islamic boarding school environment and outside the Islamic boarding school environment? Nawaning Nusantara itself is a group of young women descended from Islamic boarding school kiai or nyai who take part in managing the Islamic boarding school. Departing from the community's belief in the authority possessed by ulama in deciding and disseminating Islamic law, mainly male ulama. This research is qualitative research and focuses on social media studies. The analytical tools that I use in this research are the theory of authority popularized by Khaled Abou el-Fadl and Saba Mahmood's agency theory. From the research trip to the presentation of the research results, I found that the public's trust in the ulama and their descendants, in this case the Nawaning Nusantara Archipelago, is very strong. Public trust in the authorities of Nawaning Nusantara does not only include religion, but also social and political matters. The authority and agency of Nawaning Nusantara in terms of disseminating studies that are full of gender justice depends on life since Nawaning Nusantara was born into a family and the Islamic boarding school education and formal education that Nawaning Nusantara received.
