Abstract

The tradition of "plumpatan" is a practice where a younger sibling gets married before their older unmarried sibling. There are no restrictions in Islamic law regarding a younger sibling marrying before an older unmarried sibling, as long as all conditions are met, the individuals are ready both physically and spiritually. This study is motivated by the "plumpatan" tradition, which impedes the younger sibling from marrying before the older unmarried sibling. In practice, the tradition of "plumpatan" aims to honor and seek sincere blessings from the older sibling as the elder figure. This research aims to: 1) Understand the history and background of the "plumpatan" tradition, and 2) Explore the customary perspective al-‘Urf regarding the "plumpatan" tradition in marriage practices in Tegalarum Village, Borobudur Subdistrict, Magelang Regency. This field research employs a normative approach with the aim of determining whether the plumpatan tradition in marriage practices in Tegalarum Village, Borobudur District, Magelang Regency complies with Islamic law. The absence of specific regulations in Islamic law concerning the plumpatan tradition necessitates the theoretical framework of al-‘Urf as the analytical tool for dissecting the issues in this study. Primary sources for this research include interviews with community leaders, residents of Tegalarum Village, and practitioners of the plumpatan tradition. The research is descriptive-analytical in nature, employing qualitative data analysis through an inductive method. The analysis of al-‘Urf review on the plumpatan tradition in marriage practices in Tegalarum Village, Borobudur District, Magelang Regency indicates that the plumpatan tradition is a local custom that is commendable and does not contradict the values in Islamic law and existing laws in Indonesia. The plumpatan tradition in Tegalarum Village, based on its subject matter, falls under both 'Urf lafẓī and 'Urf ‘amalī. In terms of its scope, this tradition is categorized as 'Urf ‘āmm. The plumpatan tradition in marriage practices in Tegalarum Village, when evaluated in terms of the goodness or badness of al-‘Urf according to Sharia law, is classified as 'Urf ṣaḥīḥ, as its application and practice do not contradict religious values, etiquette, and noble cultural norms.
