Abstract

This thesis examines the marriage sanctions among the arung (nobles) in the Bugis community of Sanrego Village, Kahu Subdistrict, Bone Regency, South Sulawesi Province. It highlights that the arung in Sanrego Village impose marriage sanctions if a man from outside their group intends to marry a woman from the arung class and they are not of equal social status in terms of lineage. The data collected indicates that these sanctions or regulations are in place due to social stratification based on lineage. This is different from Islamic teachings, which view and treat all individuals equally. Therefore, the author employs social stratification theory and social change theory to analyze social stratification and changes in the practice of unequal marriage within the community, as well as the factors that lead to the imposition of such sanctions in Sanrego Village. This study is a field research study, and to address the research questions, the author uses a juridical-empirical approach with social stratification theory from Soerjono Soekanto. The thesis uses a qualitative method, with primary data collected through observation and interviews. Secondary data was obtained from books, journals, village profile documents, and other related sources. The research was conducted in Sanrego Village, Kahu Subdistrict, Bone Regency, South Sulawesi Province. The study reveals that the arung no longer consider lineage as the sole criterion for allowing their daughters to marry men who are not of the same lineage status. When an arung marries their child to a man outside their group, they now consider other factors, such as the man’s social status, wealth, power, or influence based on his knowledge. Although marriages between men not from the arung class and women from the arung class can occur, they are still subject to sanctions. These sanctions are based on the Bugis concept of ambo’e mappabbati, where lineage is determined by the paternal line rather than the maternal line.
