Abstract

This study aims to analyze the semiotics of independence of a disabled child in the YouTube "Nussa: Bundaku”. This research uses a qualitative approach with data analysis techniques based on Roland Barthes' theory. Data were obtained through non-participant observation and documentation of the film. The findings of the study indicate that the character of Nussa in the film is able to express his independence through various physical, mental, creative, and emotional actions. Physically, Nussa is able to work independently and tidy his room without the help of others. Mentally, Nussa has a strong spiritual belief and is able to think for himself. Creatively, Nussa can express his ideas in a way that is easily understood by others. Emotionally, Nussa can be accountable for his actions. The results of this study indicate that the character of Nussa creates myths about the ability of individuals with disabilities to lead independent and meaningful lives. This research is expected to provide a deeper understanding of the representation of independence of individuals with disabilities in the media, as well as insight for content creators and communication practitioners about the importance of inclusion and positive representation in portraying disabled characters in the media.
