Abstract

This study aimed to describe the independence of university students who lived away from home and worked while attending college. The research method used was qualitative with a phenomenological approach. Data collection was conducted through interviews and purposive sampling was used to select informants. Three informants participated in this study, each of whom was an out-of-town student who worked. The results of this study showed that independence played an important role for out-of-town students who worked while studying in facing challenges in their new environment and managing their dual roles as students and workers. One specific finding of this study was that the informants were able to implement values they learned on campus in their workplaces, such as the value of dressing politely. The implications of this study suggested that support for the development of independence was crucial for out-of-town students to help them balance their academic and professional roles.
