Abstract

This study aims to describe subjective well-being in calligraphy artists. Subjective well-being includes affect (positive and negative), and life satisfaction, which are important aspects in understanding individual psychological well-being. This study used a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach in exploring the subjective experiences of calligraphy artists in depth. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with 3 calligraphy artists, namely informants R, S, and M. With 31, 47, and 28 years of experience as calligraphy artists, respectively. The results showed that calligraphy artists experience a high level of positive affect in their profession. The positive affect is reflected in feelings of happiness, satisfaction, and deep sense of meaning when creating calligraphy artworks. The new finding in this study is a sense of blessing that is a driving force for calligraphy artists in continuing and surviving in their profession. The blessing is what makes calligraphy artists continue to preach through the art of beautiful writing. In contrast, negative affect such as stress or disappointment is not prominent in their experiences, suggesting their well-being is more dominated by positive affective experiences. Therefore, calligraphy artists still persist in their profession until today.
