Abstract

This research is motivated by the issue of Zn2+ ion waste pollution in the Jakarta River, which can have negative impacts on the environment and health. Currently, commonly used heavy metal detection methods, such as electrochemical methods, have limitations in extreme environmental conditions. As an alternative, optical fibers are used due to their resistance to such conditions. This study aims to design and develop a measurement device based on optical fiber sensors and characterize the device. The research was conducted in six main stages: designing and developing the measurement device, creating the optical fiber sensor, preparing ZnO samples, data collection, and characterizing the measurement device. The device design was created using Corel Draw and Fritzing, while the hardware development involved ESP32, GY8511 sensor, ADS sensor, LM5007, and software developed using Arduino IDE, Visual Studio Code, XAMPP, and a website interface. The optical fiber sensor was created by stripping the jacket and cladding and then coating the cladding with chitosan. ZnO samples were prepared by mixing ZnO powder and butanol, with solution concentration variations of 2 ppm, 4 ppm, 6 ppm, 8 ppm, and 10 ppm. Characterization was carried out to determine the sensitivity, linearity, and zero offset of the measurement device. The results showed that the sensor with a 1 cm stripped cladding had a sensitivity of -0.1151 V/ppm and a linearity of R² = 0.9594, while the sensor with a 2 cm stripped cladding had a sensitivity of -0.086 V/ppm and a linearity of R² = 0.9881.
