Abstract
Synthetic textile dyes such as naphtol blue pose several environmental pollution problems as these compounds are not naturally degradable. Silica, a porous material, is expected to be used to degrade naphtol blue dye. The silica used is the result of silica isolation from rice husks which is then destroyed with 4M NaOH and followed by melting at 500℃ to make sodium silica. The sol-gel method is carried out by adding 1M CH3COOH solution in sodium silica solution while stirring until pH 7 and a precipitate or gel is formed. The gel formed was then washed with distilled water, dried and characterised with FT-IR, and character study of adsorption of naphtol blue dye waste based on pH parameters, and contact time with chitosan comparison. FTIR results show infrared absorption of -OH vibrations of (Si-OH) silanol at wave numbers 3330 cm-1, and 1638 cm-1, Si-O vibrations of (Si-O-Si) siloxane at 1056 cm-1, and 790 cm-1, and Si-O of (Si-OH) silanol at wave number 961 cm-1 which is a functional group of silica. Furthermore, the optimum pH result of adsorption of naphtol blue dye by silica is at pH 8 with a large absorption of 5.55 x 10-5 mol/g or about 80%, while the optimum pH of chitosan occurs at pH 4 with a large absorption of 4.68 x 10-5 mol/g or about 67%. Then the results of the optimum contact time of adsorption by silica occurred at a contact time of 60 minutes with a large absorption of 5.55 x 10-5 mol/g or around 80%, while the chitosan contact time occurred at a contact time of 90 minutes with a large absorption of 5.60 x 10-5 mol/g or around 81%.
