Abstract

The enrichment of cerium from REE hydroxide derived from the roasting process of Bangka’s monazite sand via leaching and precipitation processes has been carried out. This research aims to analyze the effect of nitric acid concentration, temperature, and time variations on the cerium content and efficiency of the REE hydroxides leaching process. Furthermore, this research also aims to analyze the effect of pH variation conditions on the purity of cerium during the precipitation processes in serium purification. In this study, variations in nitric acid concentration of 0,2; 0,4; 0,5; 0,6; and 0,7M, temperature variations of 30oC, 50oC, and 75oC, and time variations of 1, 3, 10, 30, and 60 minutes were analyzed to determine the effect on cerium content and efficiency of the leaching process. pH variations of 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7 were also carried out in the precipitation process after the reduction process to determine the effect for purifying the cerium. The concentration analysis of each process as carried out using X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) instrument and X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) instrument to ensure the final product is formed. The results showed that leaching REE(OH)3 using nitric acid could separate Ce elements, which remained in the solid phase as residue, while other REEs dissolve in the liquid phase as filtrate. The concentration difference affects the solubility of rare earth elements. The higher the concentration of nitric acid, the less Ce dissolves, but more Y, La, Pr, and Nd dissolve, leading to an increased Ce content in the residue, while the Y, La, Pr, and Nd content in the residue tends to decrease. Increasing the concentration of nitric acid enhances the leaching efficiency of Y, La, Pr, and Nd, while the leaching efficiency of Ce remains constant at 0%, indicating that no cerium dissolves at any concentration. Temperature and leaching time also affect cerium content and leaching efficiency. Longer leaching times tend to decrease the content of Y, La, Pr, and Nd in the residue but increase Ce content. At all three temperature conditions, longer leaching times result in higher leaching efficiency for Y, La, Pr, and Nd. However, increasing the temperature during the same leaching duration does not increase the content of Ce and other LTJ elements. Higher leaching temperatures reduce the recovery of Y, La, Ce, Pr, and Nd, leading to a tendency for increased efficiency. The significant difference in Ksp values between cerium and other LTJ elements can purify cerium. pH variation affects cerium purity, with cerium purity increasing as the precipitation pH rises
