Abstract

This dissertation examines and analyzes Islamic educational media through a case study of the use of Hafiz dolls among middle-class Muslim families in Yogyakarta. Hafiz dolls integrate education and entertainment (edutainment) by utilizing interactive digital technology that contains Islamic content. This dissertation argues that Hafiz dolls serve as a technological medium facilitating the easy transmission of Islamic knowledge, such as learning to read the Qur’an, worship practices, moral beliefs, and the history of the Prophet, for middle-class families. The combination of Islamic religious content and entertaining education in this dissertation is termed 'Islamic edutainment,' a concept developed from the broader notions of edutainment and Islamic education. This research employs a qualitative methodology with a case study approach. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and documentation with five middle-class Muslim families who use Hafiz dolls in their daily lives, as well as with the production and distribution teams. Content analysis of the Hafiz doll media material was also conducted to understand the religious messages conveyed. The results of this research reveal two key findings: First, middleclass Muslim families are more inclined towards educational media that is both entertaining and imbued with Islamic content. Second, the Islamic educational material in Hafiz dolls is holistic, encompassing content on reading the Qur’an, faith, morals, and worship. Third, the practice of using Hafiz dolls among the middle-class Muslim families in Yogyakarta predominantly includes features such as listening to murottal (Qur’anic recitations), learning hijaiyah (Arabic alphabet) letters, memorizing short suras of the Qur’an, familiarizing with the Asmaul Husna (99 Names of Allah), establishing daily prayers, adopting commendable morals, learning about the stories of the Prophet, understanding prayer movements and recitations, fostering a love for the country, and respecting differences.
