Abstract

Religious poetry in the local language (ca' baca'an) is a transformation of two cultures, namely the local culture and the Islamic culture. These two cultures form a new knowledge, which is summarized in the ca' baca'an tradition. It is said that before Islamic da'wah penetrated the civilization of the island people, the passion of the Giliyang people was to sing songs in the Madura language. This hobby is practiced together in their daily life on the island. However, after Islam came with the help of Sayyid Ali Murtadha in 1330 and Daeng Karaeng Masalleh in 1670, there was friction between the people's love of singing and the Islamic da'wah that began to spread. Until there was a union between the two and a new tradition (ca' baca'an) was born as a representation of the acceptance of Islam in Giliyang. The purpose of this research is to find out some of the reasons why the community maintains the tradition of ca' baca'an. Because after decades of this tradition is well maintained and studied by all groups from children, adults to the elderly. Another purpose of this research is to see the value of religiosity in the ca' baca'an tradition. The value of religiousness in question is some of the Islamic teachings contained in the ca' baca'an tradition, both in the process of its implementation and the delivery of the lyrics. The approach used in this study is the theoretical approach of sociology of music and sociology of da'wah. Sociology of music sees, observes, and interprets the meaning of the music (poetry) performed by the Giliyang community, and sociology of da'wah is another approach that looks at the content of the sung lyrics. The type of research is descriptive qualitative research with data collection techniques carried out in two processes, namely interviews and observations. Meanwhile, the data obtained from interviews and observations were analyzed in four stages, namely data collection, data reduction, data verification and conclusions. Based on the research conducted, the ca' baca'an is sung after the Azan with the aim of calling the community to pray in congregation. For them, the azan is only a call to perform prayers, while the ca' recitation is an invite/reminder not to forget to perform prayers in congregation in mosques or prayer rooms. In addition, the time between azan and ikamah is a good time in Islam, so they fill it with lyrics of praise to God, but still in the Madura language. The value of religiosity in the ca' baca'an tradition includes: multicultural Islamic da'wah, representing good relations in Islam, introducing the Islamic faith from an early age, and Islamic teachings that can be understood from every text.
