Abstract

Individuals with Mental Disabilities (PDM) often face various emotional and mental challenges that affect their well-being. To improve their quality of life and social skills, art therapy through batik has become one of the alternatives applied at the Batik Learning Center of PPSDM Samekto Karti Pemalang. This study aims to provide an overview of the diverse therapeutic media used by PDM, challenging the view that they must rely solely on conventional methods, by demonstrating that they can benefit from art media through batik-making activities as a way to manage their condition. The approach used in this research is a qualitative case study, with data collection methods including observation, interviews, and documentation. To ensure data validity, triangulation methods were employed in this study. The research subjects consisted of 12 PDM who were actively involved in batik-making activities, as well as instructors who guided them. The findings of this study indicate that batik-making activities have a positive impact on the emotional and cognitive development of PDM. Through the batik-making process, PDM were able to express themselves, reduce anxiety levels, and enhance their self-confidence. The therapy focused on pattern-making, waxing, dyeing, and drying, which gradually improved the concentration and fine motor skills of PDM. Instructors also provided support and guidance, which played a crucial role in fostering a sense of security and satisfaction for PDM throughout the therapy process
