Abstract

Students from South Sumatra face challenges of uncertainty when interacting with the local community in Yogyakarta, attributed to language barriers, verbal expressions, cultural differences, and social norms such as politeness. They question their acceptance among new acquaintances and worry about effective communication and potential misunderstandings. This study explores the communication strategies employed by members of the South Sumatran student association to alleviate uncertainty. Drawing upon the uncertainty reduction theory by Charles Berger and Richard Calabrese (1975), the research delves into utilizing communication as a tool to navigate uncertainty, understand strangers, and predict their behavior during initial interactions. Employing a qualitative descriptive method, the study conducted in-depth interviews, observations, and documentation for data collection. Findings revealed that cognitive uncertainty stemmed from a lack of familiarity with Yogyakarta's conditions and challenges adapting to the local community's characteristics. Initial language barriers, particularly with the Javanese language, hindered interactions. Students utilized passive, active, and interactive strategies to mitigate uncertainty and foster empathy as part of their socialization and integration with the Yogyakarta community. In conclusion, South Sumatran students acquired knowledge, communication skills, and empathy through their efforts to reduce uncertainty, fostering harmonious social relationships and enhancing integration within their new environment
