Abstract

Gambus music is an important part of Middle Eastern culture, often used to express feelings through poetry. In the Middle East, gambus music is more often used for entertainment, and is sometimes accompanied by belly dancing, which some scholars consider unethical. When it entered Indonesia, the lyrics of several gambus songs were changed into Islamic messages, but over time this tradition faded. Basically, music also has soft power in conveying messages of preaching, politics, and education. A real example of this is Umm Khultūm, a legendary singer from Egypt who used the song "Salu Qolbi" as a tool for nationalist or liberation struggle. This study uses the critical discourse analysis method from Teun A. Van Dijk and the prophetic communication analysis from Kuntowijoyo which are used to examine the message of the lyrics of the song "Salu Qolbi". The results of this study are that the lyrics of the song "Salu Qolbi" contain prophetic communication messages that dominate liberation, because the poet focuses on the message to free the soul from the shackles of the soul from worldly elements and the spirit of love to protect the country.
