Abstract
This article discusses the critical history of Islamic integration in Malay civilization. Critical historical methodology seeks to highlight the complexity of historical narratives, by going beyond the boundaries of conventional narratives that are often influenced by political, social, or cultural biases. This approach allows the disclosure of the dynamic interaction between Islam, local culture, and global influences in the process of Islamization in the Malay world. Similarly, the critical historical approach not only enriches the understanding of the historical process, but is also relevant in analyzing the formation of Malay Islamic identity in the present day. More than that, this approach also develops historical functions to be used in shaping contemporary policies and identities, as well as providing insights in facing the challenges of modernization, globalization, and the current Malay world identity debate.
