Abstract

Legislative candidates who take part in the contest use various methods to get their political message across. One of the political communication media is interpersonal campaigning through sowan kyai culture. From the data collected, there were around 516 news portal reports related to Sowan Kyai carried out by political candidates in the period June-October 2023. Sowan is a tradition that has been maintained from generation to generation and is carried out by the Indonesian people. In terms of the meaning of the word, Sowan comes from Javanese which means facing or visiting. The Sowan Kyai phenomenon carried out by legislative candidates before the election is an interesting phenomenon. The reason is, the phenomenon of political communication carried out by politicians who took part in the election contaliation through the Sowan Kyai culture has become a mandatory culture before the election. Sowan kyai behavior carried out by politicians gives rise to certain symbols in practice. This research focuses on the symbolic behavior of legislative candidates through Sowan Kyai culture. This research method is qualitative, while data collection is through observation, documentation and interviews. The object of this research is the scope of the Sukabumi Regency area. As a result, the interactions carried out by legislative candidates and kyai in sowan culture present agreements that form a symbol. A symbol is something that is used to designate something else, based on the agreement of a group of people, which includes words (verbal messages), non-verbal behavior, and objects of meaning. The use of different languages, the behavior of kissing hands, saying greetings both when coming and going home, as well as the disposition of the role of legislative candidates as students are symbols that exist in the practice of Sowan Kyai.
