Abstract

Achievement motivation is the inner drive to achieve success, influenced by both internal and external factors. One of the external factors from the family environment is parental social support. This study aims to determine the effect of parental social support on achievement motivation among eighth-grade students at SMP Negeri 4 Kalasan. This reseach is included quantitative rearch. The subjects of the study were 98 students of SMP Negeri 4 Kalasan, the sampling method used was simple random sampling. Device that use to collect data is like parental social support scale and an achievement motivation. The achievement motivation scale was developed by the researcher based on the Achievement Motivation Theory proposed McClelland (1987) this scale include of 28 items with 5 indicators. Meanwhile, the parental social support scale was developed based on the Parental Social Support Theory proposed by Sarafino (1994). This scale include 25 items with 4 indicators. This research processed with SPSS program for Windows. The correlation coefficient was 0,984, which falls into the very high category, showed a p-value of 0,001 < 0,01, indicating a positive relationship between parental social support and achievement motivation among eighth-grade students at SMP Negeri 4 Kalasan. This means that the higher the parental social support, the higher achievement motivation, and conversely, the lower the parental social support, the lower the achievement motivation
