Abstract
This study aims to describe the reception of unmarried Muslim audiences towards the marital crisis depicted in Korean drama Queen of Tears. This drama raises issues of marriage such as background gaps, in-laws intervention, and lack of communication between husband and wife, which often lead to marital crises. The study was conducted because many young Muslim are afraid of getting married, so this study focuses on how they interpret the marital crisis in the show. The study used a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with four Muslim informants aged 18-24. The collected data were then analyzed using Stuart Hall reception theory to understand the audience positioning toward the drama. The findings indicate that audience reception tends to fall into dominant-hegemonic and negotiated positions. However, some informants also adopted oppositional positions, particularly regarding scenes that portray poor communication and gender differences. These variations in reception are influenced by factors such as age, education, and individual understanding. This study concludes that the portrayal of marital crisis in Queen of Tears reinforces the view among Muslim audiences that marriage does not always proceed smoothly. Nevertheless, the informant still respects the institution of marriage and expresses a desire to marry in the future, though not in the near term. They also recognize that there are other factors to consider before marrying, in order to minimize the occurrence of crises similar to those portrayed in the drama. These findings enrich the reception theory of the influence of culture and religion on the meaning of marriage by Muslim audiences.
