Abstract

Childcare in orphanages plays a crucial role in shaping the personality and life skills of orphans. The implementation of management functions in childcare is a vital factor in ensuring that children receive proper guidance, attention, and education. This study focuses on the implementation of management functions in childcare to enhance life skills at the Yatim Putra Islam Orphanage, Giwangan, Yogyakarta. The research aims to analyze how the functions of planning, organizing, implementing, and supervising are applied in childcare and their impact on improving the children’s life skills. This study employed a qualitative approach with a case study method. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observations, and documentation. The data analysis techniques included data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. To ensure data validity, source triangulation and method triangulation were applied. The findings of the study revealed two main points. First, the implementation of management functions in the orphanage has been quite effective. The planning function is reflected in the development of learning and skills training programs. The organizing function is evident in the clear division of responsibilities between caregivers and administrators. The implementation function involves conducting teaching activities and life skills training, while the supervision function is carried out through regular evaluations to ensure the programs meet their targets. Positive impacts include improvements in children’s communication skills, independence, and responsibility.Second, the key to successful childcare at the Yatim Putra Islam Orphanage lies in the development of life skills through fundamental childcare principles, such as fostering independence, building positive character, promoting holistic education, and involving children in decision-making. Life skills programs include practical training such as sewing, cooking, technology, leadership, self-management, and basic financial education. The children are also trained in teamwork and empathy through social activities, shaping individuals equipped to face challenges with strong skills and positive values.
