Abstract
This study was motivated by the lack of variations in learning strategies and approaches, which caused students to be less enthusiastic, less active in question and answer, and unable to develop their interests and talents, thus affecting their learning activeness and communication skills. The objectives of this study are: 1) Knowing the effectiveness of word guessing strategy through DAP approach on students' learning activeness; 2) Knowing the effectiveness of word guessing strategy through DAP approach on students' communication skills; 3) Knowing the effectiveness of word guessing strategy through DAP approach simultaneously on students' learning activeness and communication skills; and 4) Knowing the effective contribution of word guessing strategy through DAP approach on both variables. This research uses a quantitative approach with the type of quasi experiment. This research design is nonequivalent comparison-group. Samples were taken using purposive sampling technique based on the objectives of this study. The samples were fourth grade students of SD Negeri Lempuyangan 1 Yogyakarta, with class IV-A as the control class using conventional learning-discussion and IV-B as the experimental class by applying word guessing strategy through DAP approach. The research instruments were observation to measure learning activeness and questionnaire to measure students' communication skills. Data analysis was conducted through prerequisite analysis and hypothesis testing using t-test and MANOVA test. The results showed: 1) The effectiveness of word guessing strategy through DAP approach on students' learning activeness (sig. 0.000 <0.05); 2) This strategy has effectiveness on students' communication skills (sig. 0.000 < 0.05); 3) Word guessing strategy through DAP approach provides simultaneous effectiveness on students' learning activeness and communication skills (sig. 0.000 < 0.05); and 4) Effective contribution of word guessing strategy through DAP approach on learning activeness is 58% and on communication skills is 78%. Therefore, there is an effectiveness of word guessing through the DAP approach on students' learning activeness and communication skills in Indonesian language lessons at elementary schools with effective contributions of 58% and 78%, respectively.
