Abstract

Reactivity is one of the important parameters in reactor operation, as it affects reactor safety. Changes in reactivity caused by fuel temperature are referred to as the fuel temperature reactivity coefficient. Validation of the negative fuel temperature reactivity coefficient value has been carried out on the Kartini reactor. This study aims to analyze the value of the negative fuel temperature reactivity coefficient from simulations and validate the experimental negative fuel temperature reactivity coefficient with the simulation results. The negative fuel temperature reactivity coefficient is obtained from simulation results using the MCNP-6 software, with TRIGA-MCNP as a supporting software for creating input files. Three variations were used, including variations in the positions of the control rods, compensation rods, and combinations of these two control rods. The experimental results showed negative fuel temperature reactivity coefficient values of 0,72 cent/°C, 0,78 cent/°C, 0,74 cent/°C, 0,77 cent/°C, and 0,78 cent/°C for control rod position variations, 0,94 cent/°C, 0,95 cent/°C, 0,71 cent/°C, 0,76 cent/°C, and 0,59 cent/°C for compensation rod position variations, and 0,91 cent/°C, 0,83 cent/°C, 0,69 cent/°C, 0,73 cent/°C, and 1,60 cent/°C for combinations of both control rods. Meanwhile, the simulated values of the negative fuel temperature reactivity coefficient were 0,46 cent/°C, 0,39 cent/°C, 0,69 cent/°C, 0,77 cent/°C, and 0,57 cent/°C for control rod position variations, 1,77 cent/°C, 1,45 cent/°C, 1,33 cent/°C, 1,87 cent/°C, and 1,55 cent/°C for compensation rod position variations, and 1,16 cent/°C, 0.72 cent/°C, 0.83 cent/°C, 0.94 cent/°C, and 2,32 cent/°C for combinations of both control rods. The difference between the experimental and simulated results was validated using the Mann-Whitney statistical test, and the conclusion from this test was that there is no significant difference between the simulation results of the negative fuel temperature reactivity coefficient of the Kartini reactor using MCNP-6 and the experimental results.
