Abstract

This research analyzes the process of religious belief changes among the Suku Anak Dalam community residing in the Bukit Dua Belas National Park area, Air Hitam District, Pematang Kabau Village. The Suku Anak Dalam, known for their nomadic lifestyle and local wisdom traditions, have undergone significant changes in their belief systems and religious practices due to the influence of various external factors, including interactions with local communities and modernization. The methodology used in this research is a qualitative approach, which includes in-depth interviews with community leaders, participatory observation within the community, and secondary data analysis from previous studies. This research involves several informants, including religious leaders and representatives of non-governmental organizations working in the area. In the data analysis, the researchers adopted Lewis R. Rambo's theory, which provides a framework for understanding the dynamics of religious conversion among the Anak Dalam tribe. The research findings indicate that religious conversion among the Anak Dalam tribe is influenced by several factors, such as access to education, media influence, and increasingly intensive social interactions with non-tribal communities. Many tribe members have begun to embrace more dominant religions in the surrounding society, such as Islam and Christianity, which has implications for the shift in values, ritual practices, and their cultural identity. Moreover, this research found that despite the conversion, some elements of local traditions and beliefs are still maintained and integrated into the new religious practices, indicating acculturation. These findings provide an in-depth view of the social and spiritual dynamics occurring within the Anak Dalam tribe community, as well as the challenges faced in maintaining cultural identity amidst the currents of change. This research is expected to make a significant contribution to understanding the phenomenon of religious conversion in indigenous communities and its implications for the preservation of local culture.
