Abstract

The Tabut tradition is a multicultural community culture of Bengkulu which is carried out on 1-10 Muharram every year. This tradition originates from the historical study of the Karbala tragedy on 10 Muharram 61 H or 10 October 680 AD in Karbala, Iraq. The empirical problem of this study is the resistance by a Bengkulu religious figure to the Tabut tradition. The rejection is in the form of incitement carried out by certain groups to gain sympathy. Precisely in November 2013, a polemic between a cleric supported by the management of the Indonesian Mosque Association (IKMI) in Bengkulu, and the traditional institution of the Keluarga Kerukunan Tabut (KKT). The academic problem in the study of the Tabut tradition is that the structural mechanism in presenting minimum universalism carried out by the traditional institution of the Keluarga Kerukunan Tabut (KKT), to Dinas Pariwisata Provinsi Bengkulu does not seem to have produced optimal results. The argument of this study is that there is a threshold agreement between the consensus debate in the form of minimum universalism in the form of rejection and acceptance. The Tabut tradition is also an interpretation to introduce and strengthen the awareness of pluralism that Indonesian society is not monolithic. This thesis study uses qualitative field research, to analyze data obtained from informants in the field. The data sources used by the author are divided into two types, namely primary and secondary. Primary data includes nine informants, consisting of government agencies, religious organizations and traditional groups. Secondary sources include books, reports, journals and other notes. Data collection techniques in this thesis are observation, interviews and documentation. The theories used by the researcher are divided into rituals from Catherine Bell as a supporting theory, and the minimum universalism of Bikhu Parekh as the core theory. The author also uses an analysis tool in the form of consensus. The results of the research in this study show the existence of multicultural manifestations in the form of rituals, symbols, dances, and songs in the Tabut tradition. The historical aspect proves that the presence of the Tabut tradition is closely related to the Karbala tragedy, the entry of Shia Islam in Indonesia and the history of Tabut in Bengkulu. The process of minimum universalism in the Tabut tradition involves government officials represented by Dinas Pariwisata (Dispar) Provinsi Bengkulu with the traditional institution of Keluarga Kerukunan Tabut (KKT). And a minimum agreement was reached written in the memorandum of signing the Self-Management Decision between the two parties. The decision was in the form of full transfer of power to a series of Tabut rituals, and government involvement in aspects of preserving sacred traditions.
