Abstract

The relationship between religions rooted in the East and social sciences rooted in the West is often contested, especially after World Wars I and II. Dialogues between East and West are still "hot" and important to study today, as illustrated in the novel 'Uṣfr min al-Syarq. This novel, from the perspective of Genetic Structuralism, depicts such dialogues. This research is entitled Taufiq al-Ḥakīm's Worldview in the Novel 'Uṣfūr min al-Syarq (A Study of Lucien Goldmann's Genetic Structuralism). This research aims to: 1) Identifying the structure of the novel 'Uṣfūr min al-Syarq, 2) Identify the worldview in the novel 'Uṣfūr min al-Syarq, 3) Identify the social classes of Egypt in the era of the novel and the social class (collective subject) that owns the worldview. This type of research is qualitative which prioritizes the quality of the research results, namely identifying the quality and results of the three variables in the research objectives above. The research data is all information in the form of descriptions of words, phrases, sentences in each paragraph in the novel 'Uṣfr min al-Syarq as the primary data source. Secondary data sources are all philosophical texts related to worldview and all social texts related to social class and the author's collective subject. The research method uses the dialectical method. In looking at the worldview, the concrete historical social structure and the author's social group that gave birth to his work are seen. The dialectic goes from understanding the structure of the literary text to the concrete socio-cultural structure and the author's social group. The results of this understanding of the socio-cultural structure and the author's social group are used to re-understand the literary text. The results of this study show that from the structure of the novel, Taufiq al-Ḥakīm's worldview, namely Radical Islamic Socialism, can be seen. Radical Islamic Socialism tries to accommodate between Marxism and Islam as an alternative ideology to face the growing issues in Egypt, namely the issue of religion and socialism in overcoming capitalism. The social class (collective subject) of Taufiq al-Ḥakīm is the intellectual social class of Marxism.
