Abstract

This research is entitled "Personality Dynamics of the Character Salma in the Novel Ismi Salma by Fadiah Al-Faqir: A Psychoanalytic Study of Carl Gustav Jung". The personality of the main character Salma in the novel Ismi Salma experiences a dynamic of progress and decline. Salma's personality continues to develop but also experiences setbacks. This study of the character Salma is interesting because her personality is very dynamic along with the development of her life which is full of challenges. This research aims to reveal the personality dynamics of the character Salma, the internal and external factors driving personality dynamics, as well as the progression and regression of the character Salma's personality in the novel Ismi Salma by Fadiah Al-Faqir. This research is library research with the research method used being descriptive qualitative. This research approach is Carl Gustav Jung's psychoanalysis with his personality theory. Researcher found three forms of personality dynamics of the character Salma through three principles, namely opposition, compensation, and integration. Apart from that, internal factors were also found that drive Salma's personality dynamics, namely psychic energy in the form of love, curiosity and will. External factors that drive Salma's personality dynamics are positive external factors through social interactions and relationships with other people and negative external factors through family influence, romantic relationships, loss events, as well as British culture and social environment. Furthermore, the personality progression of the character Salma is represented in the form of adaptation and two dominant personality types, namely introversion and extraversion. Meanwhile, the personality regression of the character Salma is realized through the activation of the personal unconscious in the form of memories of the past and the collective unconscious in the form of dream manifestations in the archetypes.
