Abstract
Parents are expected to help children achieve and complete each developmental stage successfully. However, in reality, some parents have children with developmental issues with different characteristics and needs compared to children with normal development, which can affect parenting practices. Parental involvement becomes increasingly important and difficult for children with developmental disorders. There are 4 factors that cause parents to experience parenting stress: first, general life stress; second, the child's condition; third, psychological maturity; and lastly, economic conditions. Several literature studies suggest that cerebral palsy, like other chronic conditions, tends to cause various psychological impacts. These include feelings of guilt and responsibility experienced by parents for their child's condition, feelings of depression and helplessness, as well as excessive anxiety and overprotectiveness. The purpose of this study was to determine whether there is a relationship between parenting stress and self-esteem of parents of children with cerebral palsy in the Yogyakarta region. Respondents in this study numbered 31 parent respondents who were members of the Wahana Keluarga Cerebral Palsy community in Yogyakarta. This study used quantitative methods with saturated sampling technique. Data analysis in this study used Spearman rank correlation analysis with the help of IBM SPSS Statistics 25 software. The results of this study showed no significant relationship between parenting stress and self-esteem variables with a correlation coefficient of 0.261 and a p-value of 0.157 (p > 0.05), thus H0 was accepted. Based on the research that has been conducted regarding the relationship between parenting stress and self-esteem in parents of children with cerebral palsy, there are lessons learned, one of which is readiness and knowledge for parents and prospective parents, as readiness and knowledge can help parents reduce the risk of experiencing parenting stress and decreased self-esteem .
