Abstract

The Bajapuik tradition is a marriage tradition in Minangkabau which is a characteristic or identity of the Pariaman people. Bajapuik is seen as an obligation where the woman's family gives a mutually agreed amount of money or valuable objects to the man (future husband) before the marriage contract takes place. Minangkabau society adheres to an exogomy system of marriage patterns. Both parties or one of the married parties are not merged into their partner's relatives. Therefore, according to the structure of Minang society, everyone is a member of their respective clan and tribe, even though they have been bound by marriage. The methods used in this study include an ethnographic approach and participatory observation techniques. Through direct observation and participation in the daily activities of the Sungai Limau community, researchers can understand thoroughly how da'wah communication occurs in the context of the Bajapuik tradition. Interviews with religious leaders, traditional leaders and community leaders were also conducted to gain a deeper perspective on the practices of the Bajapuik tradition. The results of the study show that da'wah communication in the Bajapuik tradition in Sungai Limau has a very significant role in maintaining the religious and cultural identity of the community. This illustrates the complexity and peace of interaction between religion and culture in the context of local society.
