Abstract

With technological advances, communication that was previously direct now can be done remotely. Currently people tend to ignore the people around them when communicating using smartphones. This phenomenon called phubbing. This study aims to determine the relationship between fear of missing out (FOMO) and self-control with phubbing behavior in students. The research utilized a quantitative correlational method, with 197 students from UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta participating as subjects. The data analysis method used is multiple linear regression. This research uses FOMO scale (12 items, = 0,93), self-control scale (19 items, = 0,856), and phubbing behavior scale (13 items, = 0,881) as research measurement tools.. FOMO scale is a scale that validated and modified by previous researchers based on theory of Przybylski et al (2013), self-control scale is a scale developed by researcher based on theory of Tangney et al (2004) and phubbing behavior scale is modified scale based on theory of Chotpitayasunondh & Douglas (2018). The result of the study indicate a significant influence between FOMO and self-control with phubbing behavior in students. The research result show that there is a positive relationship between FOMO and phubbing behavior (sig. 0,001, r =0,477). The higher the student’s fear of missing out, the higher phubbing behavior. The result of analysis also show that there is a negative relationship between self-control and phubbing behavior (sig. 0,001 dan r = -0,359). The higher the student’s self-control, the lower phubbing behavior. FOMO and self-control contribute 27,2% to student phubbing behavior. In this way, students are expected to be able to anticipate FOMO and increase self-control in order to minimize phubbing behavior.
