Abstract

Middle adolescents with all the dynamics of rapid physical development and growth are vulnerable to body dissatisfaction. Variables that are suspected to determine the level of body dissatisfaction are online social support and comparison of physical appearance. This study aims to determine the relationship between online social support and comparison of physical appearance with body dissatisfaction in middle adolescents who use Instagram in Yogyakarta. The method used in this study is quantitative correlational. Respondents in the study were 262 middle adolescents who use Instagram in Yogyakarta who were obtained using the accidental sampling method. The measuring instrument used in this study was the adapted version of the Multidimensional Body Self-Relation Questionnaire Appearance Scale (MBSRQ-AS), the adoption of the Online Social Support Scale (OSSS) scale, and the adoption of the Physical Appearance Comparison Scale-Revised (PACS-R) scale. The results showed that there was a significant relationship between online social support and comparison of physical appearance with body dissatisfaction in middle adolescents who use Instagram in Yogyakarta. Then, partially there was a positive relationship between comparison of physical appearance with body dissatisfaction in middle adolescents who use Instagram in Yogyakarta. However, partially there was no relationship between online social support and body dissatisfaction. Then, the simultaneous effective contribution of two independent variables to body dissatisfaction was 13%. The effective contribution of physical appearance comparison to body dissatisfaction was 12.9%. Furthermore, the results of the difference test showed that there was no difference in the level of body dissatisfaction based on gender. Therefore, the practical implication of the results of this study is that middle-aged adolescents who use Instagram can reduce comparing their physical appearance with others and limit the time they spend accessing social media, thereby avoiding body dissatisfaction.
