Abstract

Islam, as a religion of rahmatan lil'alamin, establishes its teachings to achieve beneficial goals both in this world and in the afterlife, including in its legal provisions. The laws that are built pay attention to all aspects of human life, not partial ones. In general, the aim of Islamic law is jalb al-maşāliḥ wa dar'u al-mafāsid, realizing benefit and preventing damage, the greatest benefit and the smallest damage, ideally achieving benefit without any damage, both to individuals and society. One of the principles that is the foundation of Islamic law is convenience by not burdening Muslims beyond their capabilities. The embodiment of this principle is the possibility of changing the law to another law or from one act to another act that is more convenient. The reasons for this change are generally referred to as ᶁarȗrah (emergency condition ) or masyaqqah (difficulty condition). Determining a situation as an emergency or masyaqqah can vary from one person to another. That's why a study of the thoughts of Islamic legal experts is very important, one of which is the thoughts of Wahbah az-Zuḥaulī, to be used as a reference in understanding ᶁarȗrah (emergency condition ) and masyaqqah (difficulty condition).
