Abstract
The study of the interpretation of Qur'anic verses in audiovisual media has become increasingly relevant amid technological advancements, which enrich methods of spreading and interpreting religious values. One of the media frequently used to convey spiritual and socio-cultural messages is film. Among works that depict religious and spiritual elements, the film Sijjin becomes intriguing because it presents an intense visualization of magical elements tied to the values within Islamic teachings. Through mystical elements such as witchcraft, supernatural beings, and ruqyah rituals, this film aims not only to entertain but also to depict the complexity between the teachings of the Qur'an and the socio-cultural aspects of Indonesian society. This phenomenon raises questions about how the symbols and semiotic codes used in Sijjin convey the meaning of Qur'anic verses, and how the interpretation of this film impacts social and cultural values in Indonesian society. This research employs a qualitative method with a descriptive-analytic approach based on literature research, focusing on an in-depth analysis of the visual and narrative elements in Sijjin. The research data were directly obtained from the film's screening, supported by relevant literature, and analyzed using Roland Barthes' semiotic theory. Barthes' theory allows for an exploration of meaning at three levels: denotation, connotation, and myth, providing an understanding of how the film constructs meaning within a cultural context. A netnographic analysis is also conducted to explore the reactions and interactions of the audience on digital platforms, helping to understand how Qur'anic verses are socially received in the film. The research findings show that Roland Barthes' semiotic pattern in this film is divided into two main categories. First, the denotative and connotative meanings of the Qur'anic verses reflect themes of faith, protection, and the consequences of human actions. Second, the mythic and ideological meanings portray values of morality, spirituality, and cultural syncretism, where sacred verses are used as symbols of protection against supernatural forces. The implications of this interpretation demonstrate how the meaning of Qur'anic verses can influence social and cultural views on religion and supernatural phenomena. The diverse social reactions, ranging from appreciation of religious values to criticism of the relationship between religion and supernatural forces, illustrate that this film not only conveys religious beliefs but also reflects local traditions embedded in social practices. Therefore, Sijjin shows syncretism between religion and local traditions, serving as a reflection of the social dynamics, beliefs, and cultural identity that continue to evolve.
