Abstract

Religious moderation has become a crucial issue amid the diversity of students at Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta. As a multicultural institution, Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta faces the risk of intolerance, radicalism, and social polarization if the values of moderation are not effectively applied. The principles of religious moderation are essential for shaping inclusive, tolerant students capable of living harmoniously in society. However, its implementation often encounters challenges such as a lack of conceptual understanding and appropriate pedagogical approaches. This study highlights the urgency of religious moderation in Islamic religious education at Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta as an effort to foster harmony in diversity. Three main aspects are discussed in this research: (1) the paradigm of religious moderation in Islamic religious education at Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta, (2) the process of implementing religious moderation in Islamic religious education, and (3) the construct of religious moderation in Islamic religious education at Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta. This research employs a qualitative approach with a case study method. The subjects of the study are Islamic religious education lecturers and students. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation. Data analysis followed the steps of data condensation, data display, conclusion drawing, and verification. Data validity was ensured using data triangulation techniques. The findings reveal: (1) the paradigm of religious moderation in Islamic religious education at Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta is applied through inclusive, dialogical, and contextual approaches that integrate moderation principles into the curriculum, teaching, and interfaith activities. This approach aims to develop students who are tolerant and committed to justice and anti-extremism values. (2) The process of implementing religious moderation in Islamic religious education involves interactive dialogue-based learning, critical studies, and contextual approaches, including materials on tolerance and social harmony. Outside the classroom, religious moderation is practiced through student activities, interfaith seminars, and leadership training emphasizing inclusivity. The Tutorial PAI mentoring program also reinforces moderate religious understanding by involving various stakeholders to foster constructive dialogue. (3) The construct of religious moderation in Islamic religious education at Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta emphasizes a moderate, tolerant, and relevant interpretation of Islam through four pillars: national commitment, tolerance, antiviolence, and accommodation of local culture. Its implementation includes curriculum, policies, student activities, and daily practices, aiming to create "Permissive Islamic Moderation" that values diversity and promotes harmony. Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta is committed to fostering a moderate generation that is critical and maintains national unity.
