Abstract

The history of Islam intellectuals by the end of 1990s and early 2000s began as the young educated generation initiated the emergence of Islam-learning groups. The presence of these represented the resurrection of the long history of Islamic Indonesian intellectuals founded early 20th century, and Jaringan Intelektual Muda Muhammadiyah (JIMM), established on October 9, 2003, was one of them. Mentored by an anthropologist PhD, Moeslim Abdurrahman (1948-2012), whose educational background was an Islamic Boarding School, the young intellectual network was to meet the strong back-to-Qur’an-hadith spirit. Three pillars of JIMM (i.e. hermeneutics, critical social studies, and new social movements) are derived from the two fundamental authoritative Islam – the holy Qur’an and the hadiths. Guided by the concept of progressive Islam and the sociology of knowledge theory and travelling theory of Edward W. Said, this study was meant to examine the history of JIMM from 2003 to 2015. It also employed the historical method, which comprises heuristic, historical source criticism, interpretation, and historiography. The study discovered the followings. First, by early 1990s the Islam re-empowerment in Muhammadiyah was in an idle state as some intellectuals of the organization, during that period, was busy with Islam of Indonesia discourse. Along with the growing number of Islam-learning groups in the early 2000s, Moeslim Abdurrahman and several younger generations of Muhammadiyah established the JIMM. Second, JIMM worked hard to revitalize the intellectualism and the empowerment of Islam in Muhammadiyah. Through workshop, tadarus, and colloquium, JIMM disseminated Islamic discourse upon the hermeneutic of understanding the Al-Quran, religious pluralism, theology of the oppressed, gender equality and other subjects. Third, a small proportion of members of Muhammadiyah resisted and challenged JIMM because of a stigma called sipilis (stands for secularism, pluralism, and liberalism of Islam). The discrepancy came to its peak in the Muktamar Muhammadiyah of 2005 urging a JIMM dismissal, but denied. Yet, Muhammadiyah accepted JJIMM activists and invited them in the treatise on Islam sustainability formulation in 2015. The study has contributed to the intellectual dynamics and the discourse of Islam among younger generations of Muhammadiyah in the early 21 century.
